Foil Stamping Colors

What is foil stamping and how does it work?

Foil stamping uses heat and a copper die to press metallic or pigment foil into the paper surface. Unlike letterpress ink, foil is completely opaque — which means you can print light colors on dark paper.

A heated copper die is pressed against the foil sheet, which sits between the die and your paper. The heat and pressure cause the foil to release from its carrier film and bond to the paper, cleanly revealing your design. Metallic foils produce a reflectivity that no metallic ink can match — a genuine metallic surface, not a printed simulation.

These are the foil colors we keep in stock. We can also source custom foils from multiple suppliers to match nearly any specification. Digital screens vary, so treat these swatches as references — we're happy to send a physical sample before you commit.

Frequently asked questions about foil stamping

  • Can foil stamping print light colors on dark paper?

Yes. Foil stamping is completely opaque — unlike letterpress inks, which are translucent. This makes foil ideal for printing white or light colors on dark or colored paper. White foil on black paper, for example, is a very popular combination for business cards and wedding invitations.

  • Does each foil color require its own copper die?

Yes. Each color requires its own copper die (plate), and each additional color is a separate run through the press. Multi-color foil is absolutely possible but adds to the cost and production time. We'll factor this into your quote.

  • Can foil and letterpress ink be combined on the same piece?

Absolutely. Foil and letterpress ink complement each other beautifully. The key is keeping the foil and ink layers fully separated in your design file so they can be handled as distinct press runs. Common combinations: letterpress text with foil accents, or foil borders with letterpress fill color.

  • What makes metallic foil better than metallic ink?

Metallic foils are actual thin metal films transferred to paper by heat and pressure. Metallic inks are pigment-in-ink — they can look metallic, but nothing matches the reflectivity and true shine of actual foil. If you want something that genuinely glints and catches the light, foil stamping is the correct process. Metallic ink is the budget alternative, and it shows.

  • What paper stocks work best with foil stamping?

Foil stamps well on a wide range of papers, including smooth coated stocks, textured cotton papers, and colored papers. Very heavily textured papers can be challenging because the foil can't bond into the recessed areas of the texture. Smooth or lightly textured papers give the sharpest, most complete foil coverage. We can advise on paper choice when you request a quote.

  • Can you source a custom foil color not listed here?

Yes. We source foil from multiple suppliers and can find almost any color you need — custom metallics, pastels, specialty pigment foils, and seasonal colors included. Contact us with your color reference or Pantone number and we'll check availability and pricing.
